The venue was a small independent bookstore with a cafe attached, warm and bright, full of people who looked relaxed and engaged and very normal. Daniel introduced me to everyone with an arm lightly at my back, not possessive, just present. "This is Serena," he said. "She's the one I told you about." They welcomed me immediately, smiles and questions and easy laughter, and I found myself nodding along, absorbing the energy without contributing much.
