She grabbed a thick book and pulled it off the shelf before returning to her seat. She placed the book on the coffee table in front of me so I could see it. My eyes widened when I saw the gorgeous purple and white designs on the book with dark purple lettering that read: Spell Book. “A spell book?” I gasped, running my fingers down the front cover. “Is this real?” She nodded.

But I knew some hill folk—especially a hoodoo man named Clive Hartley—who could read Latin, so I put it aside for later. I looked back into the box and of course, that’s when I found it. The book that’s caused all this trouble. The Way of Ah-Tzenul. Course, that’s not what’s printed on the cover. There’s a picture of some sorta tribal man squatting down with both hands raised to the sky etched into the cover and traced in silver. Otherwise, it’s a plain-looking book, all bound in pebbly black leather.

My eyes slowly moved to spot the velvet-covered book and something written on it with golden ink that shined in the light coming through the open window. Despite thinking to ignore it at first, I found myself walking towards it a few moments later. Something about leaving this book without looking through it did not feel right to me, it just made me feel some sort of anxiousness I was not ready to deal with. Behind the panel was a small space, just big enough to hide something. Inside was a single book. It didn’t look like any of the other books in the library. Its cover was dark, almost black, and made of old leather that looked like cracked bark from a tree. The corners were worn down, and it had no title. Just a symbol. A silver moon. It shimmered faintly, even though the light in the library was dim.

The cherry finish caught the light in such a way that it highlighted the etched designs. I flipped the lid open to see the primary focus of the gift. The book’s rose-colored cover was embossed with silver designs. Its title ‘A Warrior’s Heart: Avalynn’s Fight for Justice’ stood out. A sword covered in flames pierced through the title. It looked really fucking cool. Ava had developed a love of reading, not that any of us were surprised about it. She certainly took after her mother in that regard. Our daughter could go through books faster than anyone that I personally knew, which was saying something.

“Nothing. Just… an interesting choice.” I looked down at the book, confused. Then my eyes went wide. On the cover was a man with no shirt and big muscles. A woman was pressed close to him. She sighed and started walking back to the bed when her eyes landed on her handbag that rested on top of a table and she walked towards it, she opened the bag and removed the book from inside the bag. After drawing the curtains Clara walked back to her bed with the book in her hand and settled on the bed, she placed the old dusty looking book between her thighs. The front cover was dark red and it had symbols that Clara couldn't recognize. She flipped open the book and the first page carried the title. but it's fine they changed their minds faster than I thought. "So this is the section." My eyes widened when I saw a book. “What kind of book is this?” I almost let out a curse when I saw the cover of one book in that section. On the cover there was two men almost hugging each other only wearing their underwears. “Secret to longer homosexual relationships, Male edition,” I read the title out loud. I can't believe with my two eyes that there was a section like this in a bookstore. Am I that innocent to know about what is this?
