Some passages in the printed text were also outlined or underlined. These lines had been drawn precisely, no doubt using the little metal ruler I saw in a pencil cup on the desk. Fi’s notes were all about Alexis and how the text in the book related to her specifically. Curious, I returned to the bookshelf and pulled out another book.

“Annotated too.” Winona seemed to have pointed at a random page, but she found an interesting passage. Carrie read the letters. “If she likes spanking, then maybe introduce this too.” The statement was connected to a line that branched into an encircled word: paddle. Flipping through the pages, she found it was peppered with similar scribblings. Some words were underlined for emphasis, encircled for commentary, and some had markings that Carrie barely understood. I slid it back into its gap on the shelf, and as I did, something made me pause. The pages were marked. Not my markings — I hadn't written in the books, just taken notes on my own paper. They moved deeper into the library until Pat stopped at a lone pedestal in the center of the room. Upon it sat a thick, dusty tome bound in what looked like pale, cracked leather. The cover bore no title, only a symbol: a blazing fire crowned by three horns, with jagged lines splitting its base. Pat opened the book carefully. “Mad Kings of the Underworld,” Jo read. She leaned in, studying the strange, curling script etched in faded ink. She flipped through the brittle pages until something finally caught her eye. A name. Malrik. Jo’s heart skipped.

I was searching at the lower shelves when I realized how useless it was to sweep the whole library for just one book. The library of the school was big, it collects more than ten thousand books, some dates back to the previous centuries. We have been searching for almost fifteen minutes now, Kappa had already arrived. I thought back to the clue, 'It is renowned and entitled despite the dark covers it is bright within.' I frowned, something was a bit off in the clue since there was no comma between entitled and despite. Also, why there the following letters capitalized as if it was a book title. Maybe entitled was not referring to how famous the book is but the real title of the book.
