He climbed onto a step stool, then pulled out one of the books from the very top shelf. He dusted the cover off with his hand, then blew on it before climbing back down and handing it to me.

Lila’s nerves felt frazzled with tension as she listened to the activity on the opposite side of her bedroom door. She’d secured the lock and turned out all of her lights before crawling into bed. I go up on the shelf and begin to find the book, the Latin first. I read the title on each book on the shelf until I found one that mostly seemed to teach about Latin. I grab it and jump down immediately, and I run to crash onto a chair that is in front of a table and begin to flip the pages of the book. The first page is about history, and why read something without knowing about history? I sit down patiently as I study the history as I prop my hand on the table to find out what I had never heard about. I finish with the history and decide to close the Latin book for today while I begin to practice some spells. I climb up the ladder to pick up the spell book.
