The Wrong Mr Calloway
The room smelled like old cigars and older secrets, shelves lined with books nobody had touched in years, a heavy oak desk dominating the center of the room.
I checked the obvious places first, drawers, cabinets, nothing unusual. Then I remembered Nate’s words, something that doesn’t match the rest of the furniture, and I started examining each piece more carefully.
I found it beneath the bottom drawer of an old filing cabinet, a seam slightly too clean, a panel that didn’t quite align with the rest of the wood grain. I pressed against it, and it clicked open, revealing a hidden compartment stuffed with yellowed folders.
My hands were shaking as I pulled them out.
