One of the bookshelves was sawed out, turning it into something of a secret compartment. Where is the best place to hide a book? A library, of course. But it was more than just a book—a thin booklet barely finger-wide and with a red binding, a color that she found creepily similar to dried blood. Fine. She didn’t actually think it was dried blood. Back then, she was only interested in the book’s contents—gates and portals to other worlds, other lives, other countries... If she had no other way to travel, that was how she would do it. Books also helped to forget things...and herself.

I kept busy with small chores, anything to distract myself, but the loneliness gnawed at me. One evening, while cleaning my room, I noticed a faint outline in the floor under the bed. A rectangle, perfectly aligned. My fingers traced the edge, and I found a hidden latch. With a soft click, the panel opened, revealing a shallow compartment. I pressed lightly against one of the books. Nothing. I tried another. I had never seen it before in my life but just flipping through the pages already felt like I was being led in a narrow hallway and I was struggling to breathe and find my way out of it. “Where did you find this?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Axel shrugged, his eyes still locked on the book. “In his study. Hidden behind some old scrolls. I’ve never seen it before. But what matters is what’s inside.”

Stopping her pacing, Althea turns to us, “Come with me, I want to show you something. It’s time.” There was still so much I wanted to ask and craved to know. Tawny and I followed her as she led us to the back of the room and pulled at a book from a bookcase that covered the entirety of the wall. The book fell back into its place, a loud creek and groan came from the bookcase and a puff of air sounded as the bookcase opened and revealed a hidden door. “That’s some neat shit,” Tawny whispered up at me. And I had to agree, it was pretty cool. I would never have known the hidden doorway existed, even if I was looking for it.

"These books..." Pierre frowned. "They're all untouched." Imran pressed against one shelf. It shifted slightly beneath his hand. His eyes widened. "Help me." Together they pushed harder. With a low grinding sound, the bookshelf slowly moved aside. Behind it sat a narrow room hidden within the wall. Dust covered everything. Boxes. Folders. Old recording equipment. Storage drives. Pierre stared. "I think..." Imran stepped forward carefully. "...we found it." I pushed open the double doors.

I jerked and opened my eyes only to see the amusing Blake watching me intensively. "I'm sorry," I mumbled while rubbing my eyes to let go of the remaining sleep in my eyes. "Here! A pressure point. I pushed. There was no click. No sound. But a section of the book's hollowed-out interior, cleverly concealed behind a fake page, slid open. Inside, nestled in a small, velvet-lined compartment, was not a microdot or a coded message.

He walked toward the largest bookshelf in the room. Lucian noticed there was no hesitation in his movements. Richard wasn't searching. He knew exactly where he was going. He removed three worn books from the middle shelf—an atlas, a volume of Shakespeare, and an old gardening guide Elena remembered teasing him about for years.
