"A loose stone with a crescent moon mark," Lisa muttered, her fingers clawing at the dirt. "Emily told me she found a secret compartment where the Council guards never look."
"Found it," Adrian said from behind us. He pushed a heavy, rotting bookshelf aside with one hand, revealing a dark, square hole in the stone wall that had been hidden for years.
Inside the hole lay a small, thick book bound in tattered brown leather. It was stained with a dried, dark ink—the exact same silver-black ink from the basement footprints we had seen before.
