Ruby turned her head and shot me a provocative look, her eyes brimming with smug satisfaction. I stood at the edge of the crowd, a faint, cold smile tugging at my lips. Just as I thought. A moment ago, I had cursed her in my mind, calling her an idiot, and she hadn’t reacted at all. However, the second I started thinking through specific skill data, she responded immediately. So her mind-reading skill wasn’t all-knowing. It seemed she could only pick up on the most focused, technical thoughts in my mind.

"I will have someone bring in a desk."I got up and looked at the bookcase in the room. It was crammed with different types of books. I could read, but it wasn't like I actually read books. They are rare in the North. Cade mind-linked me. "Feel free to take any you want." I nodded and pulled one out. I sauntered to the chair facing Cade and sat down, book in hand. I felt him connected with my mind. "Don't you have stuff to do?" Without looking up, I mind-linked him. "Waiting for the boys to be done."

The books on the shelf were neatly arranged but the frayed edges and the little tears on the bottom of most of the books gave out that they’d been read a couple times. Adrian didn't particularly strike me as someone who would love to read but I guess you can't always judge a person by their outward appearance. I traced my fingers along the spines, the titles ranging widely from classic literature, to mindset guides then to business strategy books. I blink several times as I take out the book and see purple tentacles on the cover. I blink and flip through it. flip through it. Holy crap. This is not the last Slade Gray book. After that, I spend an hour in the gym downstairs, and then I grab some lunch before wandering into the rec room with a book my dad sent me called Finding Your Center: The Busy Woman's Guide to Inner Peace and Tranquility. I make it three pages before I start to feel antsy. It's too easy to let my mind wander while I'm reading. My thoughts keep going back to my argument with Luca last night. Or to our practice session last week. Or to a dozen other little things I've promised myself I won't think about.

I caught on fairly quickly and now I intend to constantly block. The night falls, and after dinner I reluctantly head back to my room to study my contraband books from the library. I feel little 'bubbles' as my tummy moves about and I grin. While not strong enough to kick, these little motions make me excited and more determined. The things I need to learn most are mind reading, teleportation, and maybe even how to manipulate minds as Nox can. I sigh as I diligently read these ancient books, soaking in as much as I can retain for fear Nomias might notice then gone and come take them.

The books my mother wanted me to read were duller than any of my maths textbooks, they were harder to decipher too. If I wasn’t convinced that my mates life might be saved by the information in one of these books then I would have thrown them out of the window by now. The problem was, I still didn’t have a clue how I was supposed to use the information in these books to get my mate back and defeat Arthur. Most of the sections I had read so far talked about how to effectively protect my mind and how to control the minds of others. Maybe once I had finished reading the remaining passages then I would be able to formulate some kind of plan for my attack. But at the moment I was still clueless.
