She handed it to the woman wordlessly. The woman flipped it open, letting a soft hum escape. “Mm. You’re the quiet kind.” Aria shrugged, keeping her gaze on the counter. “Guess so.” “That’s good,” the woman said, closing the book with care. “The loud ones never know where the magic is.” She walked out, and the bell’s chime lingered like an echo in the narrow store. The stillness thickened around Aria. She wiped the counter, watered the snake plant, and rearranged the occult section by color just because the pattern felt right.

Small sparks of magic dance in the air, swirling around me, creating an atmosphere of expectation and latent power. I walk to my private library, where rows of ancient, forbidden books rest on weathered wooden shelves. Each of these books is a source of power. But there is one book in particular I seek, one that carries within it the weight of generations of enchantresses, the most potent and forbidden of all: the Bloodbound Codex.

"I don't know how to even fucking read.” I bit down in my lip, my mind running with words I could give that'd convince him. "Well, it's not really just a book,” I said, lifting the book back up. "This is a magic spell book that grants all your fucking wishes. You don't even have to read from it. Just open and say whatever the fuck it is that you want, and it magically gives that to you.” Stan arched a brow. "And why haven't you used it to get you some food?”

But instead of old stories from my grandmother’s life, the pages were scrawled with strange symbols and sketches—shorthand in her handwriting explaining the purpose of different runes and sigils. Flipping through the pages, there were sketches of wolves, and the last page that she’d written in had a detailed rendition of a nightmarish wolf-beast that made my blood run cold at the sight of it, it’s eyes smudged over with charcoal in the shape of a protective rune. My heart raced when I realized what I was holding. This was no ordinary journal, it was a spell book.

I pointed out. “Well kind of. I think she has been hiding in plain sight. Austin said that when he was travelling through here that he felt an immense surge of magic when he was in Portland.” She told us. “Wait, there is that weird ass bookstore there. You know that one that looks like a fucking mausoleum. The owner is a woman, and it sells the weirdest books and other shit.” Peadar pointed out.

Next to her was a plate that used to have a pile of sandwiches on it, most of which had migrated into my stomach. “Yes, I want to learn magic. Are there any books that tell you how?” So far I hadn’t found anything other than bad novels and some out of date almanacs. Something along the lines of Magic For Dummies would have been ideal, but I hadn’t come across anything even close to that. “No, of course there aren’t,” she said. “How would a book be able to teach you something like that? You either can do magic or you can’t.” I flicked through a book called Out In The Field, which turned out to be a guide to planting crops at different times of the year, and placed it back on the shelf.

I’m the only student in the entire university who’s allowed to just take these books off the shelf, and the strange library knows that. The library has the same kind of magic as my cousin Kenna’s castle in Veiled Valley. It’s alive. I turn with a tome about magic communication in my hand and watch hundreds of books zooming in a spiral against the turns of the staircase at the center of the library, sorted by magic. But as I pick through the racks back to my usual table, I spot someone else there. “Oh, thank the Goddess,” I rush out, slamming my book down in front of Georgia, who jostles at the noise, choking on her iced coffee.

A bell jingles when I walk into a book store called “Jinx’s Magic Shop” and my nose is immediately assaulted by the smell of stale books mixed in with a lemon-scented air freshener. Elaine spoke the words down into the glass; the magic seemed to hear her, and as she gave a tug, the lid lifted. The book beneath the glass peered through Elaine. The volumes’ binding was smooth leather, and the stitching was gold. Long, smooth letters were intricately painted across the front, and her hand brushed them softly. It was the most precious book in the world. Reaching down, she pulled it out and flipped to the page she desired. There it was in thick black letters, the word luck. The pages of the book were filled with names and places, a guide to every gifted being in the land.
