Books Like Feathers So Vicious Novels & Stories

Peaceful. Vespera Hale walked along the mahogany shelves, trailing her fingers over the spines of the books. Philosophy. Strategy. History. She stopped. On a shelf at eye level, nestled between The Art of War and a first edition of The Count of Monte Cristo, was a book she didn't recognize. It had no dust jacket. The binding was matte black, textured like volcanic rock. The lettering on the spine was silver, sharp and angular. SAVAGE REBORN.

Girls like her were their heart's slaves. I bit my inner cheek to stop myself from smiling and looking like a psycho. When I didn't budge, she slowly lowered her hand. Her eyes were still alarmed. She thought she could run. Escape a predator. And then bleed me. With her small, laughable body, I could throw her over the room, break her little wings and add them to my collection. It would be fun. Something I hadn't had in a long time. "Read it," I extended the book in her direction. She stilled, placing the vase on the table and cautiously, her tiny hands grabbed the book. Her nails were short and trimmed. I almost smiled. My little bird had no claws. Her hands were trembling. Perfect.

The feather’s glow grew brighter, pulsing like a heartbeat, until it burned the night with blinding light. And in that light, I heard a whispersoft, cruel, and not my own: “She was never yours to begin with.”

He extended one toward my chest plate with a slow, deliberate smirk. "What business do you have in the vanguard sector, Brooks?" I demanded, my hand staying clear of the glass. Egan’s eyes crawled over my fitted titanium armor, his gaze lingering on the narrow cut of my waist and the proud set of my shoulders. He took a slow, agonizing sip of the dark fluid, his scent turning thick with aggressive alpha interest. "I find myself tracking your trajectory, Chika. A wolf of your exceptional caliber and lethal posture makes me wonder—why throw your lot in with a broken king like Lucien?"

She grabs the man's hand—who, by the way, looks forty, and walks off. My cheeks heat, and I avert my eyes from their disappearing figures. I welcome the sting of my nails biting into my palms, easing the constricting feeling in my throat. Fucking hero complex. ~ It's four a.m and still dark. The crisp air filters through my lungs as I take it in, listening to the near silence of the city and the chirping of birds in the distance. Phidel sat in her room listening on her music when suddenly one of the books sitting on the mini shelves on her right corner of the room; getting to the drawer fell off. She deftly turned to it with a furrowed brow; slightly sitting upright from her relaxing position as her eyes travelled across the room.
