Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I saw something resembling entertainment. Beams of light lit up the area, provided by a circle of trucks and cars. I hid the bike and entered on foot, ditching the cloak. I don’t need to advertise I’m White Forest. People whooped and hollered, the cries of bookmakers odds crisp on the air. In my short black shirt and black pants, my tattoos stand out like a second skin. Nobody bats an eyelid as I pace around and take in the sight.

Red eyes burned brighter. Behind them the smoke thickened into something taller, something with shape, long and dark like a storm given bones. The ground split open in thin cracks that glowed red. The shadow was no longer hiding. It came straight for the center of the clearing. Straight for me. “Positions,” I said. My voice shook but it carried. “Do not break the line. In the distance, I could see a tall shape. It looked like the Thorne Tower, but it wasn't made of glass and steel. It was made of white bone, and it stretched up into the red sky like a giant finger.
