He held up the book so I could see how much of it he had read. “You’re reading my vampire romance?” Obviously, I knew this already, but I still couldn’t believe he actually had it in his hands. I was more than a little embarrassed. “Well, yeah,” Brandon said, pulling it away from me. “Fangs of Love by Amber Rose. It’s really quite interesting. I’m doing research.” He said it in an overly romanticized voice and I could feel my face turning red. “Just give it here,” I whispered, reaching for it again. He held it just out of my reach.

And the three books Brandon gave me were World Geography, Warrior Combat Skills, and Medicine Encyclopedia. My heart was so excited that it was about to pop out of my mouth. I quickly put the books into my book bag. I felt like I had a priceless treasure. "Thanks," I said in a very, very low voice. I swear I did not make a sound, but Austin glanced back at me. His unfriendly gaze scanned back and forth between Brandon and me, "Were you guys just talking?" I shook my head. Austin furrowed his brow and said in a threatening tone, "do not let me catch you pretending to be dumb and deceitful. I hate people lying to me."

Lander chewed the sandwich thoughtfully for a moment, his gaze centered on Brandon for a few seconds before he swallowed and said "So what's your name anyway? And why cant I read you.....I can read everyone so I should be able to read a little nobody like you." Totally caught off guard by the quick change of conversation, but still sickened by the Shifters tone, Brandon bit of his next response. "My fucking name is Brandon...and I don't have any idea what you're talking about. I don't give a shit if you can or can't "Read me" but have I done something to you personally? Does me liking men offend you or something?" he asked Lander directly.

“My birthday is in two months, and you can’t get me a gift like that. It’s too much.” He shrugged, then said, “Then you can pay it from your salary over… five years?” I actually laughed at how absurd that was. “No, Brandon.” We both laughed and moved along the shelf, trading quiet commentary. Brandon picked up another book at random, squinting at the spine like it was written in a foreign language. “Ah yes,” he said gravely. “This one clearly explains… things.” I laughed. “You’re holding it upside down.” He turned it, unfazed. “Details.”

Always. The cold dungeon in reminded him of Dante's Inferno. Sebestian had never liked when he read those kinds of books. He called them "guilt-inducing" and then would offer Adom a half dozen alternatives. He had had a lot of time to read though, and Dante's trilogy had been some of the books which stuck in his mind. "It's good that you came so willingly." Brandon's voice dripped with condescension. "I'll give you a treat for doing so well."
