I said, my voice surprisingly calm, “you could’ve simply said you wanted Annalisa to take over. All this talk of fire and passion... it’s getting quite theatrical, wouldn’t you say?”
He raised an eyebrow, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. “Perhaps,” he conceded. “But where’s the fun in that?”
I sighed, the fight momentarily draining out of me. “You’re impossible,” I muttered, collapsing back into the plush armchair.
“And you, Anne,” the Duke continued, his voice softening, “are far too quick to dismiss people. This Adrian fellow… there’s something about him. A certain… spark. Perhaps he’s not everything he seems.”
