They stood in the reading room at seven-fifteen. The library was empty. The staff would arrive at eight-thirty, the Tuesday's second day beginning at nine. In the interval — the hour and fifteen minutes of the building alone with its first night passed, the day before absorbed into the building's beginning, the reading room holding the residue of the twelve who had stayed for over an hour and the sixty-three who had ascended and the forty-one pauses on the fourth tread. Miriam was looking at the southeast corner.

“October 10th. Two thousand and one.” Miss Ada nodded, her fingers dancing over the keys. “I’ve already got the address for the pack house in the system. Just a moment, dear.” A small whir came from the side printer, and Miss Ada retrieved a fresh library card with Ryleigh’s name printed in bold at the bottom. “Here you go,” she said, handing it over. “You can check out five books at a time. They’re due back in two weeks. If we’re closed, there’s a drop box right by the front door.”

I didn't want Mr Lampton to feel like I was an airhead who didn't understand simple instructions. "Also when someone returns their book, you enter it into the returned register. ~ Helena ~ I prepared to go to work the following day. I worked as a librarian at the Moon Public Library (MPL). My work time varied from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on other days. I had a day off only on Sunday.
