I’d been forgotten in hell. The other inmates called me “the stray nobody wanted”. Violence was their sport; filthy words were their weapon. “Still lying about being Alpha’s lover? How come he never visits?” Their laughter echoed off the walls as fists rained down on me. “You think you could be a Luna? Wake up! You’re a stray dog. Say it!” Curled up on the floor, bleeding and crying, I whispered, “I’m sorry… I’m a stray dog. I don’t deserve Alpha… I won’t love him again…”

I mutter under my breath. Bane glances at me.“Did you hear what they said?” he asks. “Of course I heard them.” “They said there are stray rogues.” I shrug.“So?” He studies my face for a moment.“You know stray rogues can be very dangerous.” I roll my eyes immediately.“Leave the nagging.” I start walking again toward the marsh path.“I need to save my niece.” My voice comes out rough and irritated.“Whatever those things are, they can go bother someone else today.”

When they’re gone, I clean up the messy house some and wash the clothes that are scattered everywhere. A few mornings later, I’m dragged from sleep by the sound of the brothers’ shouts. Sliding from the sheets, I stealth-walk across the bedroom and crack the door. “We can’t take care of another stray,” Warrick roars. “She’s a puppy in a wolf’s body.” “But—” Callan starts.

No response came. Where could he have vanished to after leaving work more than an hour ago? Wrestling with her uncertainties, she exited his apartment and secured the door. Bingo, having enjoyed a gleeful dash in the corridor, made a conscious beeline for Rowan's place. It appeared that Bingo had adopted this space as a second home without a second thought. Returning to her room and encountering Rolland, Rowan and Bingo engaged in a silent standoff. One person and one dog locked eyes, neither eager to make the first move.

The pack was putting up a strong defense, but the strays had the numbers and the element of surprise on their side. One of the strays, Zara, moved towards a group of pack members, her eyes narrowing as she spotted Xenia. She lunged, her claws outstretched, her eyes filled with determination. She struck Xenia hard, the force of the blow sending her sprawling to the ground. A smile of satisfaction crossed Zara's face as she watched Xenia fall, but that smile quickly faded.

But Sarah… Sarah knew what Darren was talking about. Years ago, that little shit Aria had taken in a mangy stray off the side of the road. They weren’t allowed to have pets around the house since their mother was allergic, but Aria—selfish as always—had taken care of the dog anyway. Sarah still recalled how Aria would slip out like no one would notice, using her allowance to buy food and supplies. Sarah used to follow her, and found Aria keeping the little stowaway in the abandoned barn down the road.

The rogues hesitate instantly. Only for a second. But it's enough. June stumbles hard this time. The heat isn't a pulse anymore. It's a storm tearing through her body. Her legs shake violently. Her vision blurs around the edges. The wolves close in. Not disciplined. Not coordinated. Just opportunistic. Rogues. A couple from some nearby border pack. One young male already half-crazed from her scent. They don't move like hunters. They move like starving animals circling fresh blood.

He sighed and traced his thumb on my lips with his fingers. “Don’t worry, we are fine,” I knew we’ll be fine, no one would dare attack the fiercest pack in the region, it was the strays outside our borders I was worried for, they are vulnerable “The strays outside the border are whom I’m worried for, they might be a target,” I said and he narrowed his gaze on me, a flicker of surprise in his eyes. “You’re concerned for them?” He mumbled more to himself than me. I nodded. I put my hands on his palm, and he looked down at them. I almost withdrew them but he held them right where they were.

I made my decision, and I gestured for the stranger to join us. The stranger moved forward, their tail wagging, their body trembling with relief. They sat with us, and we shared our first meal together. I introduced them to the pack, and they were welcomed with open arms. The stranger soon became a valued member of the pack, and they even took on a new name: Nova. Nova became like a brother to me, and I was proud to call them my packmate. We had saved each other in more ways than one, and our bond was unbreakable.
