I gripped my phone tight, recording every word. Jane's daughter, my cousin Angela, lived there too. Angela had a bad rep and got kicked out of the family, then just a fringe member. Her only gig was dealing cards at some shady underground casino. She took one look at me and decided she did not like what she saw. "Some people think they're all that just because they got into Camford University, but they're still mooching off my family," she sneered, without saying my name but making it clear who she meant.

I demanded, my voice sharp as a blade. “Because you’re crazy!” Ernie spat, though his voice shook. “Digging into things that should’ve stayed buried!” I slammed him lightly back against the fence, just enough to rattle it. “Tell me about the burned body. Who brought it in?” His jaw worked as though he wanted to keep lying, but Regina stepped closer, her voice low and deadly calm. “If you don’t answer, I swear you’ll regret it. I’ve lived through worse than this. Don’t test me.”

I watched in silence as my childhood memories burned. "The small town of Conifer is burning this morning. Fire crews are struggling to contain a wildfire that started late last night off of US-285. Mandatory evacuations via reverse 911 are in full effect for certain divisions of Conifer and the surrounding areas." The scene cut to firefighters in full yellow gear battling the flames.

Some even had tiny, hand-drawn doodles. Regina’s fingers ran over the ink, her chest tightening. Who did this? These books weren’t just sitting here for decoration. Someone had read them. Someone had loved them. And it wasn’t Damien. As Regina flipped through the book, something slipped from between the pages and fluttered to the floor. A handmade bookmark. She leaned down to pick it up, but just as she did, something else caught her eye that was a glint of silver peeking from beneath Damien’s desk.

The paper curled the moment it kissed the flame. Scarlet didn’t hesitate. She pressed the notebook harder into the candlelight, watching as the edges blackened, the ink blistering and fading into nothing. The words she’d bled onto those pages...plans, filth, fear, secrets...warped and vanished in a hiss. Ronan was still struggling with his shirt, fabric caught over his head like a damn blindfold. She tossed the burning book into the fireplace. And screamed.

Ma’am Ague’s eyes widened at that. “You captured one?” “Your student over there engaged it. It led us to speed our operations and Regina took it upon herself to gather intel from your office. I’m sorry, ma’am, but we borrowed your book.” Without permission. Regina was expecting another death glare from her but Ma’am Ague only looked surprised, not angry. “I see. Looks like my notes led you here. I thought you were the enemy and that you are here to conduct the ritual by bringing in more human sacrifices.”

“I really tried.” “I know,” Matteo whispered. “I know you did.” They sat like that for a long time. In silence. Waiting for a miracle. --- At the old couple’s house, a fire burned in the small hearth. Derek lay on a makeshift bed, wrapped in warm blankets. Mama Sade pressed a wet cloth to his forehead. “He’s still burning up.” Papa Remy stirred soup in a pot. “We’ll keep him alive. We’ll keep him safe.”

Kennedy POV. The weather was bad, but I needed to get that new book, it's Robert birthday gift, who'd knew a grown up man would kill for the newest werewolf love book. I got into my car, drove carefully toward the local book store, they had the new book reserved for me. It was supposed to one quick drive, until I walked into the library. A girl was sitting on a bean bag, her blond hair was covering her eyes with overgrown bangs, she tried to huff them away from her face but to no use. She looked young, maybe she's just here with her parents, looking down at the book she had in her hands it was a kids story. Does she read for the local kids? Or is it just for her?

I'd never get around to seeing my face and not thinking about her, not seeing her. The girl in the mirror stared back, gaze unwavering. The left side of my face was totally affected by the fire. It was a 3 degree burns though lots of surgeries over the years have reduced the scars greatly and now, it was a little over 1 degree burns. My left eye was badly affected though and I've had to wear contact lenses. I subconsciously ran my hands over the lines marring my left face, they stretched further into my neck and chest and my tummy, then my legs. I lived through sheer luck.
