Ann woke up as she slowly got out of bed. Her body still felt weak, so she moved carefully. She went into the bathroom, washed her face, and looked at herself in the mirror. She barely recognized the woman staring back. Her face looked tired. Her eyes were swollen from crying. But there was something different in them. Determination. Ann touched her reflection gently. “You're still here,” she whispered. She returned to the bedroom and picked up her diary. She opened it to the page she had written the previous day. Her promise was still there.
