Even asleep, his magic moves toward mine like a moth to a flame. Suddenly, Bubbles appears out of nowhere. She nudges my wrist where the mark is glowing with life. She blinks slowly before turning in Kael’s direction, and I swear I see a tear drip from her eyes. She curls up between us, careful as not to touch his skin. Something flickers through my mind. It is Kael’s voice telling me that he needs to tell me about Bubbles. “Does he belong to you?” I whisper in her direction.

I grab two cups, filling one with whatever punch someone made and keeping the other empty for later. As I'm turning away, someone taps my arm. "Excuse me?" I turn to find Julian's fangirl standing there - the same girl who's been showing up at every game with his jersey number plastered across her chest. Up close, she's even prettier than I thought. Bright smile, clear skin, the kind of effortless beauty that makes people look twice. "Hey," I say, forcing a polite smile even as faint irritation curls in my stomach. "You're Bryson Miller, right? From the hockey team?" She's cheerful and talkative, words coming fast.
