The moth and the butterfly. After what felt like hours of torture Josephine walked up to the full body mirror in her panties. She turned around her back facing the mirror, slightly twisting her head to get a good view of the fresh tattoo. A small smile appeared on her lips as the mini butterfly tattoo showed cast on her ass. She loved it. "By the looks of it, you like it." The man said.

The butterfly lifted again, the blue momentary and electric, then vanished into shadow. Christopher watched, transfixed. “That’s sneaky.” Bobby smiled. “It’s smart.” She gestured toward a small placard nearby. “They don’t start like that, you know. First they’re eggs—tiny, almost invisible. Then caterpillars. Not pretty ones either. They eat constantly, shed their skin, outgrow themselves over and over again.” Christopher’s eyes widened. “Then they turn blue?” “Not right away,” she said. “They disappear first. They turn into a chrysalis. Everything changes inside, but you can’t see it. That’s the hardest part.”

But I'd taken what I could from it. I'd gone to a tattoo artist the very next week. Described the placement, the shape, the size as best as I could from what Alexander had said and from photos I'd managed to find. A butterfly. Its body was coiled around the dove, not constricting, but rather embracing it. The stake that pierced the dove's heart was adorned with a delicate filigree, resembling the threads of a DNA helix. As you gazed closer, the tattoo revealed more nuances. The dove's wings seemed to morph into tendrils, while the cobra's scales appeared to shift into molecular structures.

He traced the small tattoo on the upper-right side of my chest. “What does it mean?” he asked without taking his gaze off me. His curious face was as mesmerizing as when he was seriously working in the office. I looked down and stared at the rainbow-colored butterfly-shaped tattoo. “A symbol of welcoming a new life and escaping the confines of an asshole.” He gave a small nod, but his expression turned hard. “So, you equate yourself with a butterfly?” I smiled slightly. “I made it to Monaco when we first met!” His gaze dropped to my breasts. His long fingers stroked the underside of my right breast. “Another tattoo?”

I said, accepting her call on FaceTime. "You're just jealous you can't stand getting a tattoo. " She drawls. "Anywayyyy. Check out my tattoo." She lifts up her tank top. There's a large butterfly there with little Rs attached to the sides. "Butterflies indicate new beginnings," she beamed like she told me. Normally, butterflies would look hella childish, but the way the tattoo artist did it made it look nice. "It's beautiful." "I know, right." She put her shirt down, sitting right in front of the desk she put her laptop. "You should get one too." She lowers her voice. "After everything."

The tattoo artist gestured for her to lie down on the bed, his eyes already focused on the task ahead. "Let's get started," he said, his voice professional and detached. "What design did you have in mind for this... reminder?" Emily's voice was firm. "I want a tattoo of butterflies." The tattoo artist nodded, "Beautiful choice. But you said you wanted a tattoo to remind you of the wickedness of the world..." Emily's expression turned resolute. "I never said I was done talking. That's not all. I want you to add flaws to the tattoo. Blood and a spine tree."

“You had your initial tattooed on me, yes.” He shook his head and touched the tattoo on her ankle. “No. See, this is the heart. Half of the heart was extended down to form the letter J. Beside it is a butterfly. The body of the butterfly with a dot at the top is the letter I. The top part of the butterfly wing, is actually curved to form the letter N. Didn’t you notice why those lines were thicker than the rest of the lines?” Julianne stared at her ankle, making out the lines of her tattoo.
