The images are peeling and sundried as if they’ve been there forever. Over the pictures are the words ‘The Barded Goat Used & Collectible Books’.

He just wanted to get away. “My book, please,” he said, pointing to the textbook still in the man’s hand. “Oh, I’m sorry,” the man said, not sounding sorry at all. He handed it over slowly, his fingers brushing against Julian’s. “Thank you,” Julian said, snatching the book back a little too quickly. “I guess you’re in a hurry,” the man noted, his eyes lingering on Julian for a moment too long. A chill settled in the air between them. “You look scared. Am I frightening you?”

“These are the books I wanted to share with you. They’ve recently become some of my favorites.” I immediately picked up one of the books and gazed at the cover, letting my fingers lightly trace the texture of it. “The Man in the Island...” I whispered to myself, reading the title aloud. “This actually sounds really good. I think I’ll start reading it right now—” I was just about to open it when, out of nowhere, Bruno’s large, veiny hand landed flat on the book with a sharp smack. I turned to look at him, startled and slightly confused.

"What are you standing around for? Drag these two eyesores out of here! Do it quickly. Don't delay our party or ruin Mr. Burgess's fun!" His lackeys chimed in noisily as well. I looked coldly at Ralph as he jumped around, full of himself. Then, I took one last deep look at Gloria standing silently in the distance. Fine. Gloria had made her choice. I raised my wrist, revealing a custom communication watch engraved with the Thorne family crest, issued only to core members of the Thornes. Calmly, I pressed a speed dial I knew by heart. The call connected almost instantly. A steady, authoritative voice came through.

I asked myself, pulling it from the shelf. A brief flip through the book confirmed my theory. Only an egocentric and misogynistic arse would even think of reading that nonsense. As I was about to put it away, I noticed something shining against the back of the bookcase. Pulling out a few of the neighbouring books, I saw a button surrounded by a guilded frame. “What in the world…” I whispered to myself as I did what every person with common sense would probably not do. I pressed the button.

Damon shrugged, pushing his head forward to a book that was placed on the man's table, and the title that was written by the side was vivid, at least, enough for him to see. “That book,” he announced, raising an eyebrow. “Walking free by Dr. Munjed Muderis, in the year 2014.” “You've read it already?” The man kept revealing the shock on his face, after every word that left his mouth. “Yes,” Damon replied almost immediately, placing one hand in his pocket. “About three times to be precise, so yeah, that should be an easy guess.” “Then why did you use two options?” the man questioned, squinting.

My back aches, but I could spare a second to bow down to the elderly man. "How may I help you?" I asked him. He dug his hand inside the bag he carried. I wanted to run, but I know he won't be that foolish to kill me right in a public place. "Take." He gestured his hands forward with the book in his hand. "What is this?" I asked him, collecting the book from his hand. "It is a popular book that no one knows." He said. "What should I do with it?" I asked.

The sealed book trembled once. Then became still again. The gray-coated man folded his hands behind his back. "You've spent your life searching for answers." "But answers change people." "Sometimes..." "...they erase them." The woman stepped forward. "If you know so much..." "Why not open it yourself?" A faint smile crossed the stranger's face. "I tried." "I couldn't." "The book refuses anyone..." "...except its rightful Author." Silence. Every gaze slowly turned toward Adrian. The silver lock on the black book reflected his face.

Sienna The suffocating silence of the bar seemed to press down on my chest like a physical weight, making it incredibly hard to draw a full breath. I slowly pulled my hand back out of the hidden compartment beneath the dark marble counter, my knuckles scraping lightly against the wood of the interior frame. Wrapped securely in my trembling fingers wasn't a stash of unmarked cash, a black ledger, or a modern weapon. It was just a book. A thick, heavy, dust-jacketed volume that had been tucked away into the hollowed-out space of the bar.
