In family sagas or historical dramas, the 'man of the house' might carry a silent, corrosive grief or disappointment—a business failed, a legacy tarnished—that he feels he can't share because his function is to be the unshakable pillar. The struggle isn't just about providing, but about maintaining a fiction of control.

I see this a lot in what gets labeled 'book club fiction.' Someone like the father in Celeste Ng's 'Little Fires Everywhere' embodies this. His emotional struggle is a muffled panic, a feeling of his carefully ordered world and authority slipping away through cracks he didn't even see. He's not a villain, but his attempts to reassert control often backfire, because the real struggle is his inability to adapt his internal model of what a patriarch should be to the messy reality of his family.

That internal model is everything. The conflict comes from the rules he built for himself, often learned from his own father, chafing against his actual desires or the needs of his children. The emotional labor is in the suppression, not the action.
