Zahra's POV I quickly type out a message. Me: Hey Linc, how are you? How’s AC? Listen, I’m sorry to message out of the blue, and I’m sorry to ask this, but I just spoke to Max and he is not ok. And I don’t think he should be alone right now. I’m going to see if I can get leave to come and visit but I’m not sure that will be possible. Could you go and check in with him? So I made a call in the living room where my voice would not move down the hall. "Hello?" The familiar voice answered after three rings. "Rachel, it is Nova," I whispered, even though I was alone, the habit of secrecy already settling over me like a second skin. She was the lady Max linked with me. "Can I still access the financial logs through the backdoor login you gave me before?" A pause stretched between us, weighted with implications. "You remember the password?" Her tone was careful, professional even, but I could hear the curiosity beneath it.

Please, please, please! With trembling fingers, I tap on the icons for F******k and I*******m, eager to lose myself in the familiar feeds of friends and acquaintances. But as the apps load, my heart sinks once again. Gawking at the login screens, my accounts inexplicably logged out. So I enter my username and password, my fingers flying across the screen with difficulty. And as I hit the login button, a new and more profound creepy sensation settles in the pit of my stomach. The error message flashes across the screen in bold red letters: ‘Username and password are incorrect’.

But it settled into my stomach like something sour. “Thanks,” I murmured, refocusing on my plate. A few minutes later, Max excused himself to use the restroom. I watched him disappear around the corner, the quiet hum of the café filling in behind his absence. That’s when it happened. His phone buzzed. Twice. It was faced up on the table, the bright screen lighting up against the dark wood. My eyes flicked toward it on instinct. One message. From a contact saved only with an emoji. No name. Just a chess pawn.

“Add neon signs. And drones.” “Yes!” They worked in comfortable silence for a while until Lisa’s phone buzzed. She glanced at it. Her expression changed. Just for a second. Then she flipped the phone face down. Mira noticed. “Secret admirer?” she teased lightly. Lisa forced a smile. “Something like that.” Before Mira could respond, there was a knock on the door. Max. Of course. He walked in with exaggerated confidence. “I was in the neighborhood.” “You live in the neighborhood,” Mira said dryly.

I ask excitedly, gripping the phone tighter in my palm. “So is that a yes?” “Yes!” I practically squeal. “I’ll uh…” my voice trails off as I suddenly realize that I don’t actually have a way to get to the club. But hell, I’m resourceful. I’ll figure it out. I’ll take a damn cab if I have to. “I’ll be there soon,” I finish, grinning from ear to ear. “Use the entrance around back, Max will be there to let you in.” I open my mouth to respond and to thank him for the opportunity, but the line goes dead, indicating that he’s hung up. I guess phone etiquette is an afterthought when you’ve got a busy club to manage.

Max was content to stare at Celine while she fiddled with his phone. Celine, on the other hand, kept scrolling through the names on Max’s phone and found that Lana was the most frequently dialed number. So she secretly added another Lana entry with her number in it. ‘Heh! You don't get my number that easily. I'll let you figure that out later,’ Celine smiled, pleased with herself. “Heeeey! What are you smiling at?” Max peered over his phone.

~Gerald~ I sat up on the bed abruptly. The sleep cleared off my eyes. I was wearing only black shorts. The air conditioner had been on full blast while I was sleeping, but now, I was sweating. How in the world did Max get that special number? Yes, I was X-crow. Although Elvis handled my email account and he was the one who responded to Max’s outrageous request the other day, my special number was one that I reserved to communicate with a selected few. When not in use, I left it in Elvis’s care for safety reasons.

While working on the documents that Maya had brought in earlier, Max came into my office. “Hey, you didn't have breakfast this morning. Let's go and get some food to eat,” Max suggested. I nodded and picked up my phone. I texted the card details to Sydney but she hasn't replied to me yet, I wondered if she was truly shopping since I've not received any debit alert yet. “Are you expecting something?” Max asked. “No, why do you ask?”
