“I need to know,” I push on, “if the stronger she gets, the more likely it is that the curse will strike if I mark her.”
Morwen sighs, straightening carefully. Bones creak. Her eyes find mine. “You’re not asking about probability,” she says. “You’re asking for a guarantee. There aren’t any.”
“Answer the question anyway,” I say.
She studies me. “If you mark her out of fear,” she says, “the curse will have plenty to feed on. If you mark her out of trust, knowing exactly who she is and choosing her anyway—that’s the only path I see where this ends in anything but ash.”
