My phone burns in my pocket, and for a long moment, I can’t even move. I had promised myself I’d never call my sister again. She’s had enough of my messes. What if she yells? What if she refuses to help? What if she rubs her stripper job all over my face and calls me pathetic? My fingers tremble as I pull the phone out. I stare at it silently until the first sob escapes my throat. I have no choice. Slowly, I dial the number I swore I’d never touch again. “Callie?” Her voice pierces through me. “Oh my God…is that really you?”

She heard the slur in his voice. “And so you drank all day,” she guessed. “We were bored.” “I’m going to let you go.” “Why?” “Because I’m working.” And I can’t stand the sound of your voice when you’re drunk. “Is that really why?” “Call me back tomorrow,” she said. “When you’re sober.” “Myrna?” She hung up. She sighed and picked up her data. She’d only typed in one number when the phone rang again. She considered not answering, but finally picked up.

Disconnecting the call, I take another deep breath and whimper. “Are you okay, miss?” Big eyes stare at me worriedly, as a homeless man bends over strangely to look at me. I nod, taking another breath. “Yeah. I am now. Thank you so much for asking.” “I might have something to help you calm down.” He says, starting to rummage through his big bag filled up with bottles, causing me to smile. With another breath flipping in my throat, I chuckle. “Thank you. But I can’t. I’m sober, you know.” I lie, not wanting to decline his gentle help but also not wanting to share a bottle with a stranger.

“What if the next time this happens Jordan isn’t there to bring you to the hospital? You could’ve died! What do you think would have happened to Theo if that had happened?” I see guilt flash through her eyes and she says, “I don’t know.” “Well I do. And it wouldn’t have been good.
