My man is coming. “I would prefer to tell you in person. I am sorry, Alec, this is not a conversation to have over the phone”, I let out as tears stream down my face again. I close my eyes as he tells me he is coming. He is coming for me. I nod my head, and we end the phone call. Not long after, the midwife walks in and straps two elastic bands around my bump and plugs it into a machine that monitors the baby’s movements and heartbeat. I feel my heart a lot lighter as I cry, like a baby, again. I think I have cried more today than I have my entire life.

I say. The nurse smiles and nods. “I’m a midwife, I’m used to it, but usually the she-wolves I attend understand what I’m doing…and don’t threaten me.” “She’s a queen,” Kane says. Apparently, that’s enough of an explanation for the midwife. She pushes the bassinet over to the bed and lifts the baby into her arms. “Look at him,” I say, trying my best to ignore my snarling wolf. “He’s so beautiful.”

We must get the pup out now.” “Dammit,” Mother shoves past us and take her station beside the midwife. “She’s losing too much blood. Axel, get the doctor, and hurry.” Axel dashes out of the room, and I shove my anger away and stand closer. “She needs to push,” the midwife says urgently. “Soon, she’ll be too weak and then we’ll lose her and the babies.”

“Tell him I waited…” “No!” the maid sobbed, her grip tightening. “You shall tell him yourself! You will hold your child in your arms, and you will call your husband’s name, do you hear me?” But the woman’s head lolled to the side, her mouth parted in silent prayer. Her skin, bathed in sweat, began to pale beneath the flickering firelight. The midwife felt for movement beneath her hands. Her face blanched. “The child lives,” she whispered, “but he will not last long.”

The doctor looks between her and Rasmus, trying to gauge if he’ll get angry. “Oh, he’ll get angry all right” the midwife turns to the doctor “If you don’t hurry up and help me deal with his wife and child!” That snaps him into action; he pushes his glasses back up his nose and wipes the clammy shine off his bald head. I glance at the midwife; she sees me looking and rolls her eyes before offering me a reassuring smile. “Men. They’ll go to war but show ‘em the most natural blood in the world and their nerves are all aflame.” she waves her hands like ‘jazz hands’ as she pauses; assessing the situation

' She needed to get the baby out, the pain was killing her. 'That's it. Your baby is coming. I just need you to push one more time' said the midwife. 'Ah ahhhh' Mildred screamed as she bore down. 'Take a deep breath, midwife advised and Mildred breathed in deeply. 'Now, push with all your strength. I can see the head of the baby, already', the midwife implored Mildred. Mildred did as she was told and the baby slipped out of her.

I couldn’t help but feel a little wet at my core. Okay, honey, I will see you Friday evening. Have fun at your friend Sandy’s house. The next call I made was to Sandy. Hello, says the voice as I hear heavy breathing over the phone. Oh! Hey Maddison, how are you? I’m fine, as for you, how are you doing? Let me see, my water broke, and now I am in labor. Why don’t you go to the hospital? It is a little late, this baby is coming fast, quicker than we expected. Besides, we have a midwife here.
