Her amber eyes shone through the mist of rain, even as she bit her bottom lip with rabbit-like front teeth. “I wanted more information about Veronica’s death, so I called the station,” she began. “I used Callie’s alias – Trainee Detective Constable Samantha Woods, reporting for duty,” she joked. There were a couple of tense smiles, and I shot her a quick thumbs-up, unsure of how else to encourage her. Internally I winced at the gesture, embarrassed, but her quick, grateful smile made it worthwhile.
