Her skin is soft against my calloused fingers. "What did you say?" I growl. She just stares for a moment before slapping my hand away. Her eyes swept the room first—Allen, the kids, the machines—before finally settling on Mia. “Any change?” Ms. Calder asked quietly. Mia shook her head. “He’s awake. He just… he’s not saying much.” Ms. Calder nodded, pulled a chair closer, and lowered herself into it. She leaned forward, elbows on her knees, hands clasped. “I came straight from the station,” she said. “The police are organizing a search party. They’re also tracking her phone.” Mia’s shoulders sagged a little at that. Not relief, but something close.
