Something was coming and whatever it was, it wasn't good. Lightning flashed in the black sky, giving me enough light and time to see the shadows that moved swiftly in the dark as if they were walking on air. My hand reached for my necklace instinctively. If it came down to the worst moment, I would rip off the damn thing that restricted my powers and use my gifts.

Dad said with a cold expression. "I actually have something to say too," I said, trying to keep my tone light. "Jane's always wanted my fur business, right? Well, I've been thinking. Since we're family. I'll give it to her." The cold expression on my parents' faces cracked momentarily. They exchanged glances then looked at me. "You're serious?" Dad asked. "Is this some kind of trick? Are you asking for something in return?" They couldn't believe it. Their first reaction was to think I was playing a trick on them, and I couldn't blame them.

Three years, and Gavin was still the same arrogant, self-obsessed jerk. I didn't say a word. He had no clue I was here to take his company. Right after he swaggered inside, a janitor jogged over and grabbed the bag from me. "Sorry, Ms. Valencia—I didn't mean to be late." She'd asked me to bring bottles for some summit promo—trade enough, win a limited-edition rocket for her grandson. When she saw the haul, her face lit up. "Thank you! You just made his dream come true."

"Yeah, and I need to give Mark and Helen theirs. We separated, and I found Kimi, who was talking with Robert. I handed a gift to Robert. He opened it first. It was a bone mug. I signed, "What you will need a cup to drink out of today." He smiled and handed me mine. I opened it up to see it was a book, Moby Dick. "When I found out your pack in the north would whale, I knew that book would interest you." he signed. "Thank you." I mind-linked him, then I looked at Kimi, who was smiling at me. We handed each other the gifts. "Ready?" She mind-linked me. I nodded, and we tore our gifts open at the same time.

My brain move in a very fast speeding as I begin to think of all I have and all I can give. There is nothing… Wait. There is something. “I got books from Jude. He gave them to me as a gift. They are in the kitchen, beside my sleeping place. There are six of them there. You can have all.” Thank goodness for them. Claire looks at my feet then her eyes travel up to my head and back to my feet, before she burst into an alarmingly loud laughter. Okay, that wasn’t the reaction I had expected. “Books? What on earth am I supposed to do with books?”

“I’ll decide what to do with it later.” She hesitates. “Do you want me to block future deliveries?” I pause. Do I? Part of me wants to shut this down before it becomes a pattern. Kain made a low, humming sound before saying, “then you may keep it. It is the first edition, so I assume it will net you a lot of money.” I could feel my eyes bulging out of my sockets as he said I could keep the book! “No way! I would never sell such a precious gift!” I stated clearly. Kain was being oddly nice to me with this gesture. I knew I would treasure this gift for all eternity.
