Chapter 3 A silver envelope sat on the dark wood of Ryan Carter’s kitchen island. It looked harmless, but it had the power to stop the highest-scoring forward in the National Hockey League in his tracks. Ryan stared down at the elegant silver script across the front. He knew that handwriting instantly, and he certainly knew the name printed right above the return address: Matt "The Monster" Garrity.

“Sir?” “And effective immediately,” the coach continued, voice firm, “you’re reinstated as captain.” For half a second, the rink was a bit silence, then voiced filled the air. “What?” “Thank Goodness.” “Finally! Someone better—” I grinned so hard my face was hurting. Victor looked like he was going to kill someone if he had the means. I shoved Asher in the shoulder excitedly. “You hear that, Captain?” He looked stunned, but there was a smile still etched to his face. “I—yeah. I heard. I almost can't believe it.”

I came to a halt, bending forward, hand bracing on my thighs as I forced air into my lungs. “Damn,” Tony muttered. “Is he even human?” “That’s why he’s our captain.” A few chuckles followed. I headed towards them, and Nathan shoved me a bottle of water. Twisting it, I took a long drink, water spilling down the corner of my mouth. After emptying the bottle, I squeezed it harder than necessary and tossed it to the floor. I was about to turn, when Nathan gripped me by the arm. “Where are you going?”

The adrenaline from the game finally fading and my muscles began to throb. “Hi,” her fingers pushed back my damp hair. “How are you feeling?” I chuckled. “Really sore…” Someone touched my ankle and my eyes clamped shut from the pain. “Oh fuck!!” “I wonder how such a baby became the Captain of the Black Hawks,” I heard Marcus snare and I looked at him. I glanced back at Olive without any reply to his childish effort at rilling me up. He growled. “I'm guessing this plump bitch is your caretaker. Explains a lot really.”

How come I hadn't heard of this big match till now. For Boston Kings, this wasn’t just another college hockey match. It was the match of the year for the junior category as the seniors were on an Away Match. And the captain, of course, was Ace. He's the Captain of the Juniors and Assistant, overall. I know he plays, but I didn't realise just how great he is. His face is everywhere on posters, on the campus website, even on T-shirts. It feels strange seeing him like this, smiling from paper, when I remember our last conversation. The cold look in his eyes as he made his offer, and the way my hand trembled as I was about to sign the contract in the silence of my room.

They curled at his sides like he was gripping back a storm. “Everything okay, Captain?” I added, keeping my voice even. He didn’t speak. Instead, he stepped forward. One step. Two. Three. Until there was no space left between us. I had to crane my neck to meet his eyes, and when I did—my breath hitched. They weren’t blue. Not anymore. They were glowing. Not like contacts. Not like tricks of the light. But glowing. Gold. Bright. Flickering like fire trapped in ice. And something behind them—a hunger, a voice, something not human—watched me.
