His sobbing picked up again. Jerard, as it turned out, was the name of their leader. They were a mercenary group of kicked out cops and military. Nothing like a good old fashioned group of dishonorably discharged assholes to do the shitty things that the law wouldn’t do. They weren’t a big group. They didn’t do multiple teams. It was just them as a group, doing hired kills for the highest bidder. However they wanted.

I looked up at him, trying to read his face, see if this was a joke. It wasn’t. His expression had softened, but there was still that hunger. That weight. “I—” I started, then stopped. Swallowed. “Yeah. Okay.” “Good boy,” Captain said with that crooked, cocky smile of his, the one that curled at the edges like he’d just won a bet. Like I was a prize he’d known he’d win eventually. What the hell was it with him and knowing exactly how to rattle me with two words?

I later realized it was a wrong move because now I could inhale his minty breath. My gosh! I pushed him away immediately when I realized that since I can smell his breath, he can definitely smell mine, and I haven't brushed my teeth since yesterday. D*rn! This is so embarrassing. But the j*rk seemed to find my situation funny. His shoulders were shaking, trying to repress his mirth. “What is so funny?” I asked in a voice tinged with irritation, but very carefully, I turned my head to the side. “You.” He replied promptly. “You are funny, Veronica.”

How come I hadn't heard of this big match till now. For Boston Kings, this wasn’t just another college hockey match. It was the match of the year for the junior category as the seniors were on an Away Match. And the captain, of course, was Ace. He's the Captain of the Juniors and Assistant, overall. I know he plays, but I didn't realise just how great he is. His face is everywhere on posters, on the campus website, even on T-shirts. It feels strange seeing him like this, smiling from paper, when I remember our last conversation. The cold look in his eyes as he made his offer, and the way my hand trembled as I was about to sign the contract in the silence of my room.

“How—how do I do that?” Devin taps the key on the table and pushes it toward me. “Steal his captain’s jersey and leak the team’s playbook. Trust me, our coach hates nothing more than incompetence and recklessness. Those are the two traits he doesn’t want in his captain. If he finds out the team’s guide was leaked online, you can bet Carl will be stripped of his position—and likely kicked off the team. His teammates might even see him as a traitor and turn against him. And what is that asshole without his loyal goons…?” Devin leans back with a shrug, leaving the question hanging. It all makes sense now.

Relief that she was walking around on her own and doing better, which calmed my nerves. “Coach Dante…” Janie began slowly as she made her way into the medical station, her eyes still flitting between both of us. “Does your team know?” Her voice rose so high that I flinched at its sharpness. “Does the team know that she has been seducing you, which is why you haven't fired her for trying to kill your captain's mate?” “Janie You're back and well.” Dante began to put some space between me and him before he leaned against the table behind him, his hands in his pocket with a neutral expression on his face.

Nathan happened to walk by, stick in hand. I figured that as captain he'd at least do something about the toxic bullying. Instead he was frowning, still griping to the vice-captain. "Our blue-line defense was like wet paper today. Bunch of useless idiots." He didn't even glance at the jerseys strewn across the floor, just took one long stride over them and strode off. Watching his arrogant back, I let out a bitter laugh. Back in my dorm that night, with nowhere to vent, I logged straight into my hockey-forum alt account: IceTyrant.

Captain Jake added. “Now, this is serious.”

And now he had the audacity to sit there looking entertained. “I’m Jenna Carter,” I said, my voice low and shaking in a way I hated, but steady enough to carry the weight of my anger. “And I don’t let things go. Especially when I’m insulted and assaulted.” His laugh came out soft but It was worse than if he had yelled. “Alec,” I continued, my jaw tightening, “whatever you think you are… you just started a war you will never win. I will make sure I end you.” He laughed again louder this time, head tilting back slightly like the threat genuinely entertained him.

"Loose cannon? Says the golden boy who hides behind daddy's name. Step up or get out of my way Ryder." Guys on the ice slowed down watching us. Coach blew the whistle but we ignored it. This had to look ugly. "You think you can talk to me like that?" I shouted pushing my chest into his. "I am the captain. I built this team. You are the new guy with a rap sheet longer than the season." Kade laughed right in my face that rough sound echoing. "Built this team? With what? Your perfect press conferences and your old man's dirty money? We all know the Ryders play dirty off the ice too."
