I dialed the number and took a deep breath, placing the phone to my ear as one more way to prove that everything that had happened in the past few days was not a fever dream. “Hello, who’s there?” the familiar voice on the other side of the phone made me smile. “Rocky, it’s me – Carmen,” I announced. “Ah, yes! Carmen, Carmen! You’re back in America?” he asked. “Yes, I am,” I answered with a smile. “Can you please give the phone to him?” I looked at the door to the bedroom skeptically to make sure that Jasper was not hiding somewhere around, trying to spy and eavesdrop. For extra security, I stood up and walked out to the balcony as Rocky told me to hold on.

His life was fine before my cursed blood latched onto it and sucked all the goodness right out. “Just remember who you chose as your mate, Colton Santo…. Remember, you made a choice! A commitment. Remember you chose ME over HER!” She yells it screechingly so, as we reach a door, diagonally from the one we came out of, and he throws her a stiff look back. Carmen is full on shaking, with a mix of anger, and hysteria, obviously torn about her mate dragging his bond to some secluded room to dress. I can almost taste her mistrust and panic, and can’t help but pick up on her projections, from sheer proximity, of seeing his kissing me that night. She’s completely absorbed in her own misery.

I squeezed the sandwich so tightly my fingers sank through the bread into the tomato and lettuce. “Okay… something is definitely not right—” Cody started, then stopped himself as he turned around. “Oh.” He faced me again, one brow raised. “Wait. Are you actually jealous that Carmelo’s sitting with the popular group? And that he’s talking to Bryan? I mean, you’ve been trying for years to get Bryan’s attention, but come on… after seeing Carmelo, this was bound to happen.” Bryan was Arianna’s twin and captain of the football team. He was attractive, no doubt. He used to be one of my biggest crushes.

Yet, the California Sandra had two, maybe three different Sandra's rolled into it. The friend Sandra, the game Sandra and then... Maybe a Jack Sandra. I wish I knew what Sandra I really was. “What movie is it?” Jack wrinkled his nose. “Uh, good question.” I laughed, and he pulled a box out from under his bed. “Chances are, most of these belong to Maggie, so there could be anything in here.”

What is the point of me being what I am when I feel shackled and useless. “You heard Jasper… Santo is the enemy, and he won’t stop until he takes revenge. Not even the mate bond could make a difference, not his sister being alive, and certainly not pleading.” Carmen sounds bitter, pulling me to sit up slightly with her tone and I look to her. Catching her eye and biting my lip on the surging pain as I recognize her inner sadness. I’m not ready to admit defeat when we still have hope, even if she seems to be. She deadpan locks her gaze on mine and unflinchingly shakes her head at me, as though telling me this is not a solution.

Carmen never used to like diary books and thought that they were stupid, reminding you of the reality you want to escape from. Tears fell down her cheeks as she was reading it. 'As you are reading this, you perhaps already know that I left or I am on my way to the airport now. My plane flies at 10 pm. I don't honestly know where I am going and why. But always remember that I'll forever support you. We'll talk daily, please don't cry. I miss you already. Happy birthday again.' As she finished, a sound of a car was heard. Carmen rushed to her bedroom's window and stared outside. It was Liam!

Reese had the speakerphone on. Sandra heard everything. Tears welled up in her eyes, brimming with fragile sorrow. "It's all my fault," she whimpered. "I made Carmen angry. She must hate me now… sob… Reese, I want to go look for her. Maybe she's just hiding somewhere, waiting for me to say sorry. As soon as I apologize, once she forgives me, she won't keep scaring you like this anymore." In just a few sentences, Sandra had twisted my death into a tantrum—another of my petty tricks, a fake message meant to mislead them.

And I’m smarter.” Carmen couldn’t help but let out a gentle laugh. “Well, aren’t you just the cutest thing.” As Alice told Carmen another story, this time about a brave princess who set out to save her kingdom, Carmen was once again swept up in the magic of a tale. As Alice’s story of the valiant princess came to an end, Carmen was enveloped in a strange sensation. It was like a sudden surge of electricity that made her head spin with the intensity of déjà vu. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she had seen this little girl before, but where?
