DOMINIC’s POV. The door to my office pushes open and Fernando saunters in. He didn’t call to tell me he was coming, not that it was necessary but I like being at the top of my game. “Shadow” he calls out, lowering himself on my couch. That is the name he has been calling me since we were kids. According to him, I was his shadow meant to keep him alive and the other reason is because of my stoic character. He wanted to change it to terminator and I promised to make his life a living hell before he actually stopped. My office is actually located halfway across the city but seeing how he drove all the way here, it must be important.

But the more I pulled, the more complicated everything became. At midnight, my phone buzzed again. *“The mirror shows what’s hidden. Look closer.”* I glanced at my reflection in the windowpane. The woman staring back at me was pale and exhausted, but her eyes burned with a quiet determination. Slowly, I moved closer, finger trailing the cold glass. And then I saw it — a flicker, subtle but unmistakable. A shadow moving just behind my reflection, a shape that didn’t belong. My heart skipped. ---

“And if anyone else finds out about this, you’ll both be in more trouble than you can imagine.” Suddenly, a low, feral growl splits the air. Shadow appears in the entrance, his eyes blazing gold, his teeth bared in a fearsome snarl. “Get away from her, Caleb.” Caleb lifts his hands in mock surrender, but his grin doesn’t fade. “Easy, friend. We were just talking.” “Don’t come near her again.” Shadow’s voice is a deadly warning. Caleb backs away, slowly, but not without one last look at me.

“You’re drooling, Little River.” He teases lightly, and I flush. “Sorry” I murmur, but before he can say anything, something moves beside him and moves towards me as if coming in for a hug. I scream and jump back, only to take a close look… What in the Dr. Facilier shit, is this? Is that his shadow casually coming my way? “I-uh-I…” “Back.” He says, and the shadow seems to deflate sadly and then retreat into his actual shadow.

It’s recognition. I feel it again. That presence. Watching me from the corner that shouldn’t be there. From the shadow that crawls just outside the edge of sense. You’re a return. Those words weren’t in my ears. They were in my bones. “Who are you?” I whisper. The shadows shift, and in the hush that follows, I don’t hear a voice—but I see something. A flicker of a memory. Not mine.

She shifted her tone and added, "I get queasy in cars, so we can't go to some far-off hospital. How about the private clinic just around the corner? It's got a nicer vibe." I shot her down without hesitation, my voice brooking no argument. "No way. If we're going to do this, we're going to the top-notch place. No one's going to accuse me of foul play later on." I glanced at Wade, who was fidgeting in the crowd, amongst those so-called heroes of justice. "We're heading to Saint Mary's Hospital." The blood drained from Sarah's face. "Saint... Saint Mary's Hospital? Why there? I'm really not feeling well..."

Santos merely smiled, wiping the blood from his mouth with his hand. "I said, where is my daughter?" Shadow repeated, shaking with suppressed rage. Santos took his hand off of his wound, and Shadow noticed with a start that although there was no wing there, the wound itself had healed. A guttural hiss was all the warning he had before Santos appeared in front of him, grabbing Shadow by the throat and lifting him high into the air. "Did you really think you could win against me so easily?" Santos questioned as Shadow felt his lungs begin to struggle for air.

While we're walking inside, I told Daniel, "Shadow is one of the scariest loan sharks of Colorado so don't get into trouble with him. For him, everyone's the same." "Is this a warning?" "Definitely." Shadow walked to me and greeted me saying, "Lucy! I didn't think you'd be coming for real. What's the problem?" Since he was surrounded by his guys I asked him, "Can we talk somewhere private?" He nodded and took us to a room where he held some guys in chains. I pointed at them and asked, "What about them?" Shadow ordered his guys to get rid of them. Once we're alone, I pointed at Daniel and said to Shadow, "He's one of the grandsons of Mr Anderson."

The shadow wolf moved with eerie silence, taking advantage of Louie's distraction to launch a surprise attack, its mouth aimed straight for his vulnerable neck. Fear clenched my heart as I found that shadow wolf. Without hesitation, I grabbed a handful of sand and hurled it at the shadow wolf's eyes, shouting, "Watch out, Louie!" The sudden intervention and sand disrupted the shadow wolf's aim, causing it to miss its intended target and stumble momentarily.
