Arkan’s car smelled of smoke and old leather. An older model, with cracked black leather seats and arcane symbols nearly erased under the dashboard. The steering wheel had the cold metallic touch of a forgotten artifact. I sat in the back, the place where I felt least exposed, least vulnerable, and drew the sheath of the knife Max had given me, positioning it within reach of my hand.
"Relax," Max said, glancing in the rearview mirror with that crooked smile. "If anyone tries to touch you, they lose a hand."
