I didn’t hesitate. I pulled Fifty Shades of Grey first (cliché, yes, but I needed an entry point), then The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty by Anne Rice, Story of O, a slim volume called The New Topping Book just to balance it out, and two anthologies with titles like Bound Hearts and Surrender to Me. The stack felt heavy in my arms, like contraband. I carried them to the my corner and hid them under the table. I sat down, and opened the first book.

Saturday morning, after breakfast, Don gave Caroline the three books together. Not the individual copies, which she had received over the years of their publication—The Inside Account in the fifteenth year, The Ground Keeps in the sixteenth, The Emergent World in the eighteenth. She had read each one when it was published, had written to them about each one, and had discussed them with Ernest and Don on subsequent visits. But Don had had a set bound together: The Inside Account and The Ground Keeps and The Emergent World in a single volume, the three books bound in dark green leather with a title stamped in gold on the spine: THE INSIDE ACCOUNT / THE GROUND KEEPS / THE EMERGENT WORLD.

She looked up when Sheels impatiently tapped the counter. “Ms. Hemmingworth,” she said airily before going back to her parchment. She wrote a few details before clipping it to a folder stacked so neatly on her left side. She then extracted the biggest and the thickest of books Hera had ever seen. Placing it carefully on the counter, she flicked through the pages, scanning data after data with nothing but a finger, moving it up and down so fast that Hera had no time following her movement. “Hera Brown, right?”

Caitlin walked to it and held out her hands, relishing in its heat. Caitlin looked around, surveying the cozy room. It was dimly lit by candle sconces and bedecked with rugs and cozy, antique sitting chairs. What caught her eye most, though, were the bookcases: she saw at a glance that there was an abundance of riches in this small room. She was astonished. It was a treasure trove of ancient, rare volumes. She felt as if she’d stepped back in time, to a lost world. “I’m looking for a very rare volume,” Caitlin said. “I’m not even certain it exists. Vairo’s De Fascino Libri Tres. I am looking for the other half of a missing page.”

“How’s the pain?” “I’ll live.” I grunted as I picked up the books she had dropped to distract myself from the pain of her checking over my injuries. “I found those on Stephanie’s bookshelf.” She chuckled. “Thought you could use something to keep you busy. I picked that one because the author has my name.” I looked more closely at the books she had brought, chuckling when I saw that one was titled ‘The Rogue Queen’ by Rory McCauley-Hayman. I waved the second book titled ‘Breaking The Bond’, in the air.

It didn’t hurt she was an excellent midwife. Brooke left the compound shortly after Perdition escaped. No one knew exactly where she was. There was speculation that Damnation had her killed, but there was no proof. Camilla Dawn had a feeling she would be back, but she was too consumed with her own well being to concentrate much on where Brooke was. Camilla Dawn missed her friend.
