A few hundred dollars later, and we were proud pet owners. Next stop was the pet store. We selected a pet bed, food and food bowls for each animal. We got some small stuffed mice for the kitten and some chew bones for Coco. We had got cat litter and a pan to put it in. Animals needed a lot of shit. I had Mystic in her box in the pushcart. We couldn't leave her in the hot car. I walked towards the register with all the things we were going to purchase. Ana had Coco with her on her leash.

I quickly typed back, "Seven thousand dollars?" "Yeah," Lenny replied immediately. "Our cat is a little princess. Just imagine how jealous the other cats would be if they rode back in a Maybach." I stared at this message, still reeling in disbelief. Even I, the owner, had never ridden in a Maybach. Yet, Lenny expected me to spend seven thousand dollars so my cat could ride in one? She peered at me through her round glasses for a moment, then smiled again. “Enjoy.” I was then left alone. I simply shook my head. I dug into the contents of the box. It held a number of books, newspapers and photographs. My eyes caught a small leather bound booklet, with the outline of a curved cat pressed onto it’s cover. I pulled it out– ‘A Feline’s Capabilities…The Cat as The Obsidian Circle’s Symbol” it read.

I stood up and climbed down from the chair, and the cat came running towards me. "Meow," the cat snuggled into my arms even more, closing her eyes. "Hey there, cutie," I said as I gently stroked the cat's back. I picked up the cat and noticed the Ancient book on the table. I dusted off the cover of the book and carefully flipped open a few pages. "Weird!" I exclaimed as I realized that the pages were completely blank. I scoffed and closed the book back. I slipped on my flip-flop slippers and walked out of the room, still holding the cat.

“Can’t wait to see it. So, what do you say I help you stock up? You’ll need supplies for all that serious art.” He guided me to an aisle filled with drawing books, pencils, and every crayon color I could imagine. I picked out a big sketchbook with blank pages, perfect for my next dragon masterpiece. Uncle Liam even helped me choose crayons and pencils, ones in colors like “sunset orange” and “mermaid teal.” Once I had my art supplies, we found Rhett’s favorite section—books about dinosaurs. His face lit up as he ran his fingers over the covers, picking out a thick book filled with dinosaur pictures and facts, plus a few comic books about a dino superhero.

Zane told him. I slid two thin storybooks into the main compartment of the backpack, one about dinosaurs, one about a cat. Miss Lina had asked us to bring a favorite book, and he picked two. “Papi, what if the T-Rex on my shirt eats my shorts?” Ash asked. “He only eats green stuff,” Zane said. “Broccoli, peas, all the evil vegetables.” “What about Pepper?” Ash sounded worried. “Pepper eats the T-Rex,” Zane answered, flat. “We already talked about this. Cats beat every imaginary dinosaur.”

I wandered through the aisles, running my fingers along the spines, feeling a sense of belonging I hadn't felt in a long time. I spent the whole day there, completely lost among the books, reading story after story until I lost track of time. One book caught my attention "The Adventures of Sir Flufftail" a ridiculous but absolutely hilarious story about a brave and very dramatic rabbit knight who went on quests to save stolen carrot cakes from mischievous squirrels.

I can see in her eyes and behavior that she was very interested as she get more closer to me. As I flipped the first page of the book and asked the name of the first animal picture, instead of answering me, she leaned closer on me looking at the booked in my hands, I can only see now her head as it covered the entire book page. She was amused because the book was in 3D pages, that she did not answered yet my question. "Jade what animal is that?" I asked her again as I was also amused with her excitement. "A cat, a big cat!" she said with a big smile looking at me, her white pearly teeth showing.

Catherine was fourteen months old. She didn’t toddle anymore. She walked with intention. Unsteady only when distracted. Determined when focused. The apartment had shifted again to match her growth. The foam activity mats were gone. In their place stood a small wooden table scarred by spoon impacts and bite marks. Board books lived in low stacks. Cabinet locks remained. Cameras remained.
