Catherine slurred. “Great now that we ran into you. Let’s dance,” Cameron said quickly before his better judgement engaged. “Ugh. I don’t dance to music like this,” Catherine said as she waved her hand around. “What do you mean music like this?” Ezekiel asked. “I . . . I just don’t like this kind of music. I’m more of an opera lover,” Catherine answered. “And she has just as much rhythm as a Catholic priest,” Chelsea said with a smirk. “I’m sure a slow song will come on in a minute,” Cameron said and held his hand out to Catherine.

Anything. Cassandra chuckled, admiring her. She was glistening. She was so ready for her. She dived her head for a taste when something soft brushed against her face. She paused, lazily raised her head, her forehead touching against a bunch of white fur. The cat licked her nose, purring at her and she shrieked, sitting back abruptly, her head banging back against the edge of the seat.

Leo and Luna swelled in size, each swiping with a paw, smashing zombie skulls to pieces. Silent Snowy followed, his snow-white fur gleaming, suddenly engulfed in vivid red flames. The fire roared, relentless and unyielding, consuming the entire street. Within moments, the zombie horde was annihilated. Snowy flicked his fluffy tail and leapt onto my shoulder. "Mama, this whole area is ours now. What's next?" What to do? I took the three cats to a government-constructed refuge and willingly submitted their genetic blood samples for the research and breeding of the next generation.

Cassandra’s POV Shit. ‘Bad kittie,” I hissed at the cat the moment I realized my camera had been turned on. Not knowing what else to do, I dove down, my head between my legs, trying to get my face away from the camera. Stoffs, not knowing that she’d done anything wrong, just curled up on the laptop. Everyone started cooing when they saw her. “Oh my, what a pretty little kitty,” I heard someone say. “Look at her. All snuggled up on the keyboard. Oh! She just yawned! I saw her cute little pink tongue. Are we boring you, little kitty?” someone else gushed.

“A creep? There’s no way someone like that got into a place like this.” “But Uncle, he really—” “Don’t worry. I’m here tonight. No one’s gonna touch even a strand of your hair.” Marc stood up. Cassandra sighed in frustration. How could her uncle brush off something that might come back to haunt them? But her chaotic thoughts faded the moment Marc pulled her into a hug. “Listen to this song,” he whispered. Cassandra tuned into the old song playing in the background. It was probably older than her dad. She listened closely to the lyrics of Love Me Tender, sung by a woman that night.

With an oomph, I grabbed her ankles, steadying her. From below we probably looked like a circus act. Two clowns in a tree. “I’ve got you.” “Who’s got you?” “Good question. Hold still.” She did. Unfortunately, the cat didn’t. It used Cassandra as a stepladder, hopping from her arm to her shoulder – tangling a paw in her hair and eliciting a squeal of pain from Cassandra – then skidding down Cassandra’s back and onto my back shoulder. “Don’t move, you dumb cat,” I warned the hissing animal, reaching to try and grab it with one hand, while holding Cassandra’s ankle with the other.

I made cream soup to thank you for saving Momo." Momo, her fluffy Ragdoll cat. Wade hesitated, then nodded and tried calling me. But my phone was dead. Completely out. Annoyance flickered across his face. "Fine, playing games again. If you're not going to answer, then don't ever pick up," he muttered.

But Sofia, her eyes shining, added softly, “It wasn’t singing. Just… a little hum. Off-key. Charming, really.” Cassandra added her voice was gentler, almost pleading. “When we were children, Selena used to hum a song– an old Neapolitan lullaby. Do you know it?” And before anyone could stop her, Cassandra sang the first few lines, her voice soft as a whisper. Valerie’s fork clattered against her plate. Her hands trembled. Her lips parted as if the melody tugged something buried deep, something fragile and dangerous. “I….” She pressed a hand to her temple. “That song… I don’t know why, but it feels…” She trailed off, panic rising in her eyes.

Lyra was already walking away from the middle when Catherine grabs her by the hand and whispered “I’m about to try something, and I need you for it.” Lyra, confused, just obeyed and followed Catherine to the middle of the studio. Catherine put on the shoes and everyone froze as soon as she had laced up the shoes, as well as Dex. This was everybody’s first time seeing Catherine perform and Anita’s first time seeing Catherine dance after seven years. Catherine nods at Lyra and her mother, and Anita gave another signal to the person operating the music to play. The song began playing, and Catherine could feel Lyra already losing hope.
