"He’s my boss, okay? Nothing more." Kiara arched an eyebrow. "You sure about that? I mean, have you looked at yourself? You’re blushing, girl. Blushing. Check yourself inside and out, then answer that question honestly." Cassia paused for a moment, as if Kiara's words made her unsure. "It's not like that," she quickly said, but her voice shook just enough to make her friends laugh victoriously. "Uh-huh. You hear that, Quinn? Denial is a river, my friend," Kiara joked, earning an eye-roll from Cassia.

They all turned to me as if that was what they were waiting for. “Yes, she is the one, but I lied.” I swallowed my saliva hard, and Edna dropped her face. “I was in denial at that time when I said those words.” I continued, and Amos, who was leaning on a wall at the back of the hall, nodded his head in support of what I was saying. “Because…” I stopped and turned to Edna, who was now shaking tremendously. “She is my mate.” Whispers and gasps echoed in the hall after my sudden statement.

It is an email from the city council. The moment I open it, frustration slams into me. It is always the same—one step forward, only to be shoved two steps back. A low growl slips from me before I can stop it, making Elysia lift her head in alarm. “What happened?” she asks quickly, her tone sharpened with concern. “They rejected it,” I bite out. “Rejected what?” she presses. “My petition for the rogues,” I mutter, shoving away from the table. “What are you doing?” she asks as I pour my unfinished coffee into the sink. The mug slips in my hand, shattering with a sharp crack. I blink down at my palm as blood begins to well and drip steadily.

I looked at her wrong. “I stayed with Trisha. "Hmm, are you sure?" "I don't have to lie to you," I murmured as seriously as possible. I felt sad and disappointed, definitely this day would not be pretty. -It's okay. Today I will come a little later than normal, I will stay working with a colleague. Will you do something after work? I try and divert the subject. “None of my business?
