My work wasn’t due to start until after the new year, but the possibilities the article hinted at were too enticing to overlook. When I reached the dull light, I was right about it. It was the lodge. But my smile vanished. Phones were out. Everyone was at the cliff nearby, laughing and capturing the freaking meteor storm I just risked my life for. The trees on the way were huge. I had no clue it had started. I fumbled with my backpack, dumping it in the snow and running over to the edge with my tripod and camera despite the ache in my feet. NASA predicted an ursid outburst that would be visible over western North America a few days ago. Now it’s freaking real.

I hurriedly caught up with Raven, walking alongside him on the street. Nearby, a couple was excitedly chatting. "There's a once-in-a-century meteor shower tonight. They say couples who watch meteor showers together will stay happy forever. Babe, we have to go to the observatory!" I slowed my pace as I remembered this same day in my past life. Back then, I had been full of hope, begging Raven to accompany me to the observatory. However, he had coldly refused, saying, "Our marking wasn't even voluntary. Before Yvette could open her mouth to scold him, Nicole suddenly noticed something. “It’s raining!” Everyone looked out the car window. Bean-sized raindrops fell and splattered on the windows. Yvette urged Ian. “What are you waiting for? Let’s go back! It’s impossible to see a meteor shower in the rain…”

Nobody could foresee what would happen tomorrow. The only thing we could be certain of was what we did today, and then accept everything that it would bring to us. After Vivian sent Noelle to the hospital to have the doctor tend to her wounds, she drove her back to her house. It was already very late, and there were very few pedestrians on the street. When Noelle got down from her car, she looked skyward and exclaimed, “Meteor! Miss Carraway, look! It's a meteor!”
