She’s barely ten and completely naked. “Changeling,” Willow breathes and takes a step back. “Yes,” Zael agrees. “We are no danger to you. Show us your true self.” The air in the truck shimmers and the ten-year-old changes into a grown woman with wispy, silver hair that hangs to the back of her knees. Her grey, wrinkly face is sharp and pointy, instead of eyes she has slits, and where her nose should be there are two holes. When she smiles, she reveals long, sharp teeth. “Where’s my husband?” Her voice is scratchy and sounds like nails on a chalkboard.

"There are at least twelve more of them." The room was quiet. "Twelve confirmed," he said. "Possibly more. What I examined from the remains contained a kind of record. Not a memory exactly but something like an imprint of connections. The Changelings do not communicate directly with each other but they are aware of each other in a general sense. Like knowing a door exists without being able to see through it. From what I could read from that imprint there are at minimum twelve others currently embedded in kingdoms and territories across the known world."
