“What history?” She shook her head, returning to her chopping. “Not my story to tell.” “That’s not fair.” “Fair doesn’t keep people alive in this world, honey.” She slid a plate of bread and fruit toward me. “Eat.” I sighed, picking at the bread. “Do you ever feel like you’re protecting Leo more than he protects himself?” Her eyes softened. “All the time. Now, I lay on my bed, thinking. People think loyalty is born out of duty. That it comes from oaths, from bloodlines, from the fear of what happens if you disobey. Maybe that’s true for most. A chill rippled through me. “Father,” Zane said slowly, “what are you implying?” Mr. Carter smiled, that calm, dangerous smile I’d learned to hate. “I’m implying, son, that in times of war, loyalty is everything. “Then let the cost be mine to bear. I will not allow you to harm him. That is final.” Solomon moved slightly behind me, a silent show of support.
