I nodded silently. “Thank you.”
“Don’t thank me,” Henry said. “You’ll have to earn it.”
He turned to lead the way, and I followed — down the long hallway where every step echoed faintly. The mansion was vast, more like a museum than a home. Glass walls revealed gardens lit by moonlight, and tall paintings of men who looked as if they hadn’t smiled in centuries hung on the walls.
“This place,” I murmured, “it’s beautiful… but lonely.”
