Zoey finally asked after a moment of silence.
Charlotte paused for a moment, her expression hardening slightly as she considered the question. She turned away from Zoey and walked towards the door.
“I don’t owe you an explanation,” Charlotte said coldly without turning back.
Zoey felt a pang of disappointment but didn’t press further. Instead, she focused on finishing her meal in silence while Charlotte remained lost in thought.
As Zoey ate, memories flooded back to her, the memories of running through dark forests, hiding from those who wanted to harm her, and feeling alone in a world that seemed so vast and unwelcoming.
