I couldn’t do that again. Just as I was putting out the syrup, I heard footsteps coming down the hall. Freezing, I glanced up. Charlotte sauntered into the kitchen, still in her clothes from yesterday, her hair a frazzled mess. She smiled at me as she eyed the set table. She assumed I’d set three plates for herself, Oliver, and me. Then her eyes landed on the makeshift fort in the living room. I tried to speak but my throat constricted. Julia must have moved, because her legs were poking out from under the fort. Charlotte took one look at Julia’s legs and her eyes narrowed.

You can stay in my guest room for the night and be back on the bus tomorrow. We have one come every Sunday and Monday.” I never got back on the bus that day, nor did I get on the bus the next day.
