Within minutes, several men began discreetly moving through the crowd, clearly searching for Eleanor. Adam returned to me, his hands on my arms. “Are you okay?” “I’m fine,” I said. “She didn’t do anything, just talked a lot of nonsense.” He exhaled sharply, his fingers tightening slightly on my arms. “She won’t get away with this. I’ll make sure of it.” I reached up, placing my hand on his cheek. “Adam, I’m not afraid of her. You shouldn’t be either. She’s just desperate.” His eyes softened for a moment before hardening again. “Desperation can be dangerous, Charlotte. I won’t take any chances with you.”

I began to panic out of fear. "Please be alright," I said to the wind, hoping a guard did not take her to have his way with her. I shifted and followed her scent. Clay and Maxwell copied me, and we began to follow her scent. We moved for an hour, tracking her scent and faint footsteps. We saw an indentation on the ground where she must have fallen while running. Was she naked, or did her helper give her clothes? I was troubled. Her scent led all the way to the highway and disappeared. I smelled the burnt tire scent and howled at the moon. Scarlett had hitched a ride. I plopped by the side of the road, distraught. I did not know what to do.

Outside, the city was awakening unaware of the silent war raging beneath its surface. Elena stared at the crumpled piece of paper in her hands, a list of names and locations scrawled hastily by Damien before he collapsed. “These are the ones Ryan was working with,” she murmured. “We thought we had cut off his head, but it looks like the snake has more venom.” Her voice was low, tired but resolute.
