In my mind, I could already see Eva’s face filled with disappointment and betrayal, and that was something I couldn’t bear.
I took a shaky step back. I needed space. I needed air. I needed a second to think clearly.
But before I could move farther, Evan stepped forward. He closed the distance between us quickly, and in an instant, I was caught between his arms. His hands were on either side of me, and his body leaned in—not rough or harsh, but firm enough to keep me from slipping away.
