But now, it feels like I’m chasing shadows, digging through Luna’s past, trying to piece together the puzzle of who she really is. Tonight has been especially long. I’ve been chasing dead ends, trying to find out the truth about her mother’s death and who her father is. It’s like she never existed—no record of her birth, no trace of her past. According to the system, Luna—or Lena—was never born. It’s as if she vanished before she even had a chance to live. In some twisted way, it’s a good thing for her, but it makes my job harder. She clearly went to great lengths to disappear. That means those from her past won't find her easily.

She said and stormed out, the sound of her sobs trailing behind her. I drew a long sigh. She was right. Everything I said was just an excuse. I could easily make her my Luna if I wanted to but that was the problem. I wasn't ready to make her my Luna yet. I must have fallen asleep because I woke to hear Chase in the sitting area talking to someone on his phone. “Are you sure?” He was speaking quietly to not wake me. “Yeah, I get it. Nothing in the archives about such things.” He sighed, “Please don’t give up. We need to free our Luna of this lunatic. Yeah, just keep searching.”

And I, his Luna, undermined that by disappearing on the first night of what was supposed to be a family retreat. It doesn't matter that I was sick. It doesn't matter that watching him with Cassandra and Liam feels like swallowing glass. What matters is how it looked to the betas, to anyone who might hear about it later. So for the rest of the week, I try. I show up to breakfast on time, dressed and composed. I smile when Liam shows me the rocks he collected by the pool. I make polite conversation about the weather, the resort amenities, and the quality of the hot springs.

She might be strong or might have even grown stronger since Liam gave her his mark, but still, she could not take on Noah not to talk of Isaac that was beside him. She looked behind Noah and her eyes zeroed in on the gray colored mansion. It was all her fault.
