I learned to be thankful and quiet. That acceptance made me hate Christmas. Love songs made my skin crawl. The lights under our tree looked like glass eyes. The ribbons on the presents were traps. Every year, the house tuned itself to cheer and I pretended to enjoy it. The twenty-fifth became the night when a new kind of cold touched my bones. It was the day the truth had crawled out at me like an animal. It was the day I had learned how much of my life had been decided by other hands.

Just like that, I told him everything that was happening, excluding my one-night stand story. As predicted, he was furious. Just like Emily, he has never liked Josh for me. The call ended, but not without me letting him know not to let anyone know what happened. I quickly had my bath and changed into something more comfortable. Today is Christmas, and I will have a fun-filled evening. It dawned on me that I did not see any Christmas trees hanging around anywhere. Nothing feels like the season around here. For me, Christmas meant making huge meals for everyone I wasn’t allowed to share in. It meant listening as everyone else opened gifts, and had fun. Until Jax left for school he would give me a gift, and so did Luna Jane, but once they were gone those stopped.” “Chastity, I am so sorry.”

He replied as he looked away. " The Christmas Spirit does not entail you believing what your friends believe but it entails believing what you think is right.
