Valerius remained beside her, one hand casually resting on the brass pole of her mount, his eyes never leaving her face.
“You’re really not smiling enough,” she teased, reaching down to tug his sleeve. “Come on, just once. For me.”
A pause and then, faint but undeniable, his lips curved.
Chloe’s chest tightened. She had seen his hunger, his cruelty, his power. But here, under strings of carnival lights, he almost looked human.
Later, at the top of the Ferris wheel, the city sprawled beneath them in glittering lights. Chloe pressed her forehead to the cool glass of the cabin window, awed. “I can’t believe I’m here. That I’m still me.”
