What she saw left her breathless, her heart pounding in her chest. A brilliant blue magic circle glowed beneath her feet, illuminating the night like a second moon. It was an exact replica of the one she had drawn earlier, but now it was etched in ethereal mana rather than the dry earth. The entire circle shimmered with an azure hue, tinged with a crimson that went unnoticed by the others. For a few heartbeats, the magic circle held its luminescence, casting an otherworldly glow upon Lily's face. Then, as quickly as it had appeared, it faded, disappearing as if it had never been there at all.

I don’t know if it’s noon or twilight. The illusions grow worse. I see my mother. Not her real self, but a version of her... whole, smiling, arms open wide. I almost walk toward her. Almost believe it. But I stop myself because I notice that her eyes are wrong. Too bright. Too perfect and when I blink, she’s gone just the same way she appeared. Well, that was close. We come to a clearing, a circle of stone, moss-covered and silent. The trees around it form a dome, their branches weaving overhead like cathedral arches. And at the center of the circle is a gate made of thorns and golden light.

Full circle. And just beginning.
