By dusk, they reached the northern edge of the city. Flames clawed at the rooftops, leaping from one timbered house to the next. Families fled into the streets, clutching children and bundles of belongings. Soldiers stood at corners, not helping, but holding the people back with cold eyes, letting the fire spread.
The crowd’s despair broke into shouts when they saw her.
